Can You Afford to Offer a Group Plan?
For the first time since the roll out of the Affordable Care Act, premiums in 2018 are largely more expensive on the individual Marketplace (at full price) than employer-based plans. Worse, deductibles are two to ten times larger for an individual than for a group. We are typically able to help a company offer insurance for the first time (or the first time in a few years) at prices that are less than or equivalent to the cost of offering to reimburse employees for buying insurance on their own, but since the cost of premiums are pre-tax for both the employer and the employer, the total cost ends up being less than an individual plan with the same price. Best of all, most employer-based plans can boast a wider network than individual plans can offer.
I've spoken to several employers each month in 2018 who have told me key employees have left their business because they did not offer a group health plan and a life event (such as a pregnancy) forced the employee to take a big corporate job to insure their family. This leaves the business in a scramble to find and train new personnel, and let's be honest, it leaves employees who want the small business atmosphere out in the cold.
